Автор подає історію соціологічних теорій про їжу та споживання. Цей короткий опис за великим рахунком збігається з описом розвитку всієї дисципліни. Мета цього тексту не в тому, щоб дати власний чи оригінальний погляд на розвиток соціології, а в тому, щоб познайомити зацікавлених читачів з головними напрямами соціологічної літератури й посиланнями на сучасні дослідження їжі та споживання. Крім того, цей текст прагне показати, що соціологічні та історичні дослідження часто перетинаються і збагачують одне одного
